Simon says…but what does JESUS say?

So much learning happened at Concordia Mission Institute! The knowledge and experience gained from this training for missionaries BY missionaries could fill a book, but here are some gleanings of things I learned.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” -Matthew 28:19-20a

Ah yes, the disciple verse. I have had this verse ingrained in my memory since I don’t know how long. It has made multiple appearances in church, Bible studies, and schooling. After all, Jesus said it, so it’s kind of a big deal.

As a little girl, and even as a high school Spanish teacher, one of my favorite games to lead is Simon Says (or Simón Dice). The rules are simple: if Simon tells you to do it, you, well, DO IT! If not, you just ignore it.

Being Simon was a pretty big deal on the playground. He was the boss, no doubt.

So what if in the game of Simon Says, we simply memorized his commands, discussed them in groups, journaled about them, or simply imagined a life with those actions?

It seems silly, doesn’t it?

So why, then, are all Christians not acting as disciples? After all, Jesus says to do it. Francis Chan has a great skit on this–it’s worth two minutes of your time!

Honestly, I have not spent a significant amount of time contemplating what will happen to those who do never hear the Gospel message. Won’t God have mercy on those innocent people who have had ZERO exposure to the Good News of Jesus’ death and resurrection?

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” -Romans 3:23

There is NO such thing as an innocent person, apart from Jesus Christ. We ALL need a Savior, because we ALL fall short.

Ethan and I will be spreading the Gospel message to youth in Costa Rica who are involved in human trafficking. But sharing the Gospel does not stay in that one role of our lives. What about those we encounter in the airport? In the line at the DMV? Everywhere, everyday?

I do not share this message out of pride, for there are more times than I am willing to admit that I have failed to share this life-changing message.

This is urgent. We are ALL called to share the Gospel message to the ends of the earth.

The good news? It is not our work to be done. We are the hands and feet, but the Holy Spirit makes the faith happen.

“The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24
